Donor Eggs In Fertility Treatments: What You Need to Know
There are several reasons a couple may use IVF with donor eggs to conceive a child. The process of using donor eggs may seem overwhelming and costly, but fortunately, the average success rate of in vitro fertilization (IVF) using donor eggs is between 45 and 53 percent according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
To help you better understand the donor egg process, let’s take a closer look at donor eggs in fertility treatments.
What is Egg Donation?
Egg donation involves an egg cell, also known as an oocyte, being extracted from an egg donor, and utilized to create an embryo during the process of IVF. Before the egg extraction process, the donor takes medication to stimulate their ovaries to produce multiple eggs. An embryo is then created in a lab using the donor eggs and either sperm from a male partner or donor sperm. The resulting embryo can then be implanted into your uterus or into the uterus of a gestational carrier.
Why Use an Egg Donor?
Did you know that 1 in every 8 women have problems getting or staying pregnant? Infertility is beyond devastating and donor eggs is an added variable on the journey to parenthood.
Individuals choose the leading egg collective located in Southern California for a variety of reasons. Some of our clients’ have experienced previously failed, multiple IVF attempts or ovarian reserves have diminished with age — while others may be experiencing fertility issues due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Some female patients may have undergone fertility-limiting cancer treatments or have genetic disorders that they don’t wish to pass on to their children — while single men and LGBTQ+ couples build families through donor eggs and surrogacy.
Some of the reasons for diminished ovarian reserves for women over 40 include:
- Early menopause due to cancer treatment
- Early onset of menopause due to genetics
- Naturally low ovarian reserve from unknown causes
- Being born without ovaries
- Poor egg quality
- To avoid passing on known genetic disorders or diseases
